Not so long ago, Information Technology (IT) was a very hot course in the Philippines. in the early 90’s everybody wanted to take up BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology and other computer-related fields of specialization. Today, those students who took up IT and IT-related courses are the ones complaining about their salaries and seeking higher rates.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) stated that there are many job opportunities for Filipino (Pinoy) OFWs in Asian countries like Brunei, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. Although the application process for these countries are not the same, these countries need more professionals and skilled workers. The job opportunities for Pinoy abroad are indeed a partial answer to Philippine unemployment.

Latest news on employment has it that the Department of labor and Employment in the Philippines is finding ways for OFWs to gain employment in European countries. For the weary Filipino jobseekers, this update is a good news once more since if more jobs for Pinoys can be created in Europe, more OFWs will benefit since many find Europe a better destination than countries in the Middle East. It seems that this year (2008) is a good year for Pinoy OFWs. This is because more job opportunities await Filipino workers including nurses and nursing graduates in Canada and the United Kingdom. A group of Canadian employers expressed their intention to hire more Pinoy OFWs. Recruitment will be done through licensed recruitment agencies and jobseekers will pay no placement fee.

Here in the Philippines, job mismatch is not uncommon. For example, a Registered Nurse (RN) will work in a call center, a Medical Technologist will work as a SAP employee, an Accountant will work as a miner, a management graduate will work as a medical representative, and so on and so forth. Job mismatch researches are too many to count and have been so extensive over the past years.
