The National Telecommunications Commission of the Philippines alerted the public of text messaging scams like the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office or PCSO Text Scam. These text scams use legitimate non-government organizations such as foundations, agencies or even form a dummy company or agency. One of those non-existing agencies that victimized many cell phone users is the Philippine Charity Foundation (PCF) Text Scam. Scam artists even use genuine groups like the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to scam people via Text Messaging or SMS.

Are you addicted to texting? If yes, then be warned about the latest Philippine Charity Foundation (PCF) Text Scam where my wife was almost victimized by a certain Janet Lim who allegedly was an employee of the Philippines Charity Foundation.

The Philippines, being dubbed as “the Texting Capital of the World”, is also a great market for cell phones and other high-tech gadgets like laptops/notebooks and MP3 players. In my opinion, Filipinos are truly fascinated by cellular phones and other high-tech gadgets because of curiosity. We can’t say that every Filipino can afford to buy a Blackberry 8320 phone or a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic cell phones but Filipino culture saw that everything new and shiny is attractive to many Pinoys. :-)

Senator Richard Gordon proposed through Senate Bill 2402 that text messaging should be taxed in the Philippines. As early as now, many Filipinos have expressed dismay over this bill. Interviewed cell phone users are disgusted and complained that this “TEXT TAX” is abusive and unfair to the consumers (in this case, the subscribers).

The Philippines, being branded as the “Texting Capital of the World” might already be experiencing some of the negative effects of texting. This is evidenced by the poor academic performance of students especially in spelling. Texting and/or cellphone addiction can do so much damage to our country’s future. Our great passion for new cellphone models packed with new and better features (thanks Nokia, Samsung, Motorla, et al.) makes this craving for cellphone texting grow even more. But beware of the possible consequences.
