After Typhoon Helen and Typhoon Igme destroyed millions worth of property in Ilocos Norte, Typhoon Karen followed shortly. Lately, Ilocos Norte has been visited by typhoons more frequently than before. This could be an effect of climate changes experienced worldwide.
Other provinces affected by Typhoon Karen were Cagayan Valley, Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao. Typhoon Karen packed maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph, and is moving west-northwest at 15 kph. In Laoag City, we have experienced at least 240 kph winds all throughout the night of August 20th. Storm Signal Number 2 was flagged in Northern Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Batanes, Babuyan Group of Islands, and Calayan Group of Islands. However, as Typhoon Karen progressed, Ilocos Norte’s signal was raised to Signal Number 3. The water level of the Laoag City river (Padsan) almost reached the top of Gilbert bridge and all roads were flooded. More than 396,000 families were affected.
Ilocos Norte did not have electric power for two days (August 19-20) and it’s only this morning (August 21) that the power is back. Internet connections are also up and internet users in this province are all back online.
