There is a new way to campaign for an office in the Philippines - E-campaign (electronic campaign, if I may say). This is because presidentiables and senatoriables have joined cyberspace (by way of social networks like Friendster and Facebook and of course, blogging) as a means to campaign for their target positions in the 2010 Presidential Election.

Although most of them will say that social networking is a good way to inform the Filipino public (especially voters) about their “accomplishments” and government programs, this is clearly (as many have viewed it) a blatant advertisement for themselves and/or campaigns.  Well, this is a free country and the internet is a great medium of communication and source of information. Personally, I don’t really mind. However, this is my first time to hear politics and social networking bundled in a single package. Sometimes I just find that irresistibly funny.

So far, politicians who have been identified as having accounts with either Friendster, Facebook, or free-hosted blogs are: Senator Manny Villar, Senator Chiz Escudero and Senator Mar Roxas. I do not have the complete list yet but I will update this as soon as I get my hands on the data.

As to my personal take on high-profile Filipino politicians who are active in social networks, all I can say is, that’s ok as long as they’re doing their jobs well that’s not a problem with me. In fact, I might look up for their profiles in Friendster and Facebook and chat with them if I get the chance. :-)
