After watching the GMA news covering Judy Ann (Juday) Santos’ Meralco commercial/infomercial, my mind was boggled. I’ve wanted to write about this a week ago. The Meralco commercial/infomercial really seemed like anti-poor. Many people see it that way. Meralco seems to be justifying its price increases per kilowatt hour which affects millions of Filipinos.
Judy Ann Santos (Juday) in the commercial explains why Meralco has to increase its charges and what are the roles of the corporation in distributing electricity to people’s home appliances, machineries in factories, street lights and so on and so forth. The generation charges and system loss charged by Meralco are unquestionably exorbitant as of this writing. Even in provinces, the system loss charges are huge and people keep complaining why they should shoulder the company’s “loss” due to any cause. Good point!
The system loss is perhaps the most stupid invention of Meralco and other electric cooperatives in the province. In Ilocos Norte, when I asked the electric bill collector what does “System Loss” mean (because I’m paying more system loss charges than my actual consumption), the collector answered “it’s the loss incurred by INEC (Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative) when somebody steals electricity through illegal wiring or using a jumper”. Now tell me, is it fair that you pay for something your neighbor stole from others? WTF!!!
