The main character in the Gucci Gang Scandal, DJ Montano, plans to sue Brian Gorrell for libel. Brian Gorrell is an Australian blogger who claims that he had an intimate relationship with DJ Montano and allegedly owes him 70,000 Australian dollars.
An excerpt from wikipedia.org states that
The Gucci Gang controversy is a series of events that involved an Australian blogger Brian Gorrell who published his accusation against his former boyfriend—identified as DJ Montano—of swindling him of money totaling $70,000. Gorrell’s blog, which was first published on March 4, 2008, has also accused Montano’s well-to-do friends, whom he tagged as “Gucci Gang”, of attempting to cover up the deed and striking back at him. The blog has since become a major gossip topic in Philippines’ capital city Manila, exposing its high-society youths’ alleged freeloading lifestyle and addiction to cocaine. It has also tested Philippine and Australian online libel laws, and raised questions about the extent of freedom of speech in blogging.
Last night on “Bandila”, a late night news show in the Philippines, DJ Montano and his family spoke on national television expressing their intent to sue Brian Gorrell for libel. DJ Montano claimed that Brian Gorrell’s statements in his blog are all false.
This brings us to the issue of ethics in blogging. According to sociologists, blogging is a no-holds-barred place where anything goes and there is no restriction to a blog’s content, style of writing, etc.
Will the Gucci Gang Scandal ever be resolved? The question is unclear as it is still very hot. Developments of this case will be followed up in the coming days.
