The National Telecommunications Commission of the Philippines alerted the public of text messaging scams like the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office or PCSO Text Scam. These text scams use legitimate non-government organizations such as foundations, agencies or even form a dummy company or agency. One of those non-existing agencies that victimized many cell phone users is the Philippine Charity Foundation (PCF) Text Scam. Scam artists even use genuine groups like the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to scam people via Text Messaging or SMS.

Manny Villar resigned today as the Senate President of the Philippines. Manny Villar was replaced as Senate president by Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile who gained approval from the majority of senators on the floor. Manny Villar is a presidential candidate for the automated 2010 presidential elections and has accounts with various social networks. In addition, Pulse Asia’s survey that he is already number 2 in their nationwide survey. It must have affected his colleagues’ earlier decision to oust him as Senate President.

Senator Richard Gordon proposed through Senate Bill 2402 that text messaging should be taxed in the Philippines. As early as now, many Filipinos have expressed dismay over this bill. Interviewed cell phone users are disgusted and complained that this “TEXT TAX” is abusive and unfair to the consumers (in this case, the subscribers).

Janina San Miguel Backs Out of the Miss World Beauty Contest

Bb. Pilipinas-World winner Janina San Miguel resigned as the country’s Bb. Pilipinas-World title holder. This means that Janina San Miguel will not be competing in the Miss World contest. Danielle Castaño will replace Janina San Miguel as the official Philippine representative, reports indicate.

In case you did not know, Janina San Miguel became an instant celebrity via a controversial win of the Binibining Pilipinas-World title this year. Many Filipinos here and abroad got mad the Bb. Pilipinas organizers because of Janina San Miguel’s victory of the Bb. Pilipinas-World title.

Moreover, GMA News stated that

Beauty queen Janina San Miguel has resigned as the country’s official representative to the 2008 Miss World beauty pageant.

A statement from the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) said San Miguel cited as reason for her decision the recent death of his grandfather.

“The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title,” the BPCI statement read.

The Taiwanese government and Filipinos (Pinoys) in Lebanon gave support to the victims of Typhoon Frank by sending money to the Philippines through Philippine government agencies. This show of support has been much-needed especially in Iloilo where Typhoon Frank hit hard.

As a Pinoy, I have always been on these things because whether the victims are from Ilocos Norte or not, it somewhat hurts to see my countrymen suffering.

This is because presidentiables and senatoriables have joined cyberspace (by way of social networks like Friendster and Facebook and of course, blogging) as a means to campaign for their target positions in the 2010 Presidential Election.

Don’t be shocked with the number of out-of-school youths in the Philippines. This does not mean total enrollments are dropping. In fact, enrollments have been increasing by an average of 0.98 percent every year, data from the education department’s research and statistics division shows.

Likewise, to some extent, the drop can be explained by changes in the way the education department computes participation rates.

After watching the GMA news covering Judy Ann (Juday) Santos’ Meralco commercial/infomercial, my mind was boggled. I’ve wanted to write about this a week ago. The Meralco commercial/infomercial really seemed like anti-poor. Many people see it that way. Meralco seems to be justifying its price increases per kilowatt hour which affects millions of Filipinos.
